With the SS19 launch of the new Joules collection Rebecca Collingridge from Joules discusses the collaboration with Bedeck season on season as we bring to life their signature prints to bedding designs
The Joules creative teams travelled to Wells Beach, Norfolk for Inspiration for this season’s collection. Blustery walks turned to picnics on the beach, venturing out to the potting shed and down into the garden - a journey that saw them gather inspiration along the way.

The end of year reveal from Pantone for the colour of the year is an annual wait of anticipation. Following on from 2018’s majestic ‘Ultra Violet’ and 2017’s ‘Greenery’, the reveal of ‘Living Coral’ as 2019’s colour of the year has been described by Pantone as “life affirming” with a “golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge”
A soft pinky peach colour, calm and nurturing which works across all seasons, if you think tropical/sunset inspired hues through the summer months and moodier earthy terracotta tones through the winter – the versatility of this colour can be coordinated beautifully with colours throughout the same colour family.
The 2019 choice also highlights that the best colours come from nature. The leafy green hue of 2017 also testament to that. The inspiration source also draws attention to the beauty of coral reefs along with their fragility and delicacy which we should always protect.
Ongoing for the past 20 years, Pantones Colour of the Year has guided and influenced decisions across many industries including fashion and home furnishings. Here at Bedeck we love to keep an eye on the colour reveal and see how the filtering trend has subconsciously influenced our upcoming collections well in advance of its December reveal.

Autumn / Winter 18 saw the re-launch of our successful brand Bedeck 1951 to Bedeck of Belfast. With an extensive sixty seven year history, we started business back in 1951 as a linen handkerchief manufacturer and it’s with this knowledge & heritage we delve into the history and craftsmanship of Belfast’s long linen legacy, bringing you a collection of bed, bath and window solutions re-imagined for the here and now.
Looking Back
The Victorian era was renowned for exploration and industry; the discovery of new diverse cultures, goods and traditions, supported by the booming advances of manufacturing which brought vigour and colour to Britain. Belfast, in particular, experienced a golden age under Queen Victoria and in 1888 it was granted city status, cementing itself as one of the world’s leading industrial cities. Renowned for its linen – often called Linenopolis - it became the linen capital of the world.

It is with this knowledge we’ve set about celebrating Belfast’s linen history and trading

It was with this thinking that our savvy designers went about the design process for Helena Springfield Resort, working with designs and colour-ways that could be mixed and matched within their colour stories, allowing you to curate the look, mix throws, cushion and curtains to create that certain 'Je ne sais quoi' in your own home.
Think soothing tropical greens, mesmerizing oceanic blues to Sahara inspired yellows. Resort encapsulates that holiday feel; relaxed, colourful and affluent. Inspired by our favourite retreats - taking us from the lush tropics of the Maldives; to the fiery African Serengeti; to lounging in luxury along the French Riviera
Taking a retrospective look back and revisiting the very style sported by the upper echelons of society, an array of patterns were explored from the stripes to checks, botanical patterns and motifs each developing the four key themes of the collection; nautical, oceanic, safari and tropical. Artworks were hand painted without our in-house design studio presenting a collection that sings with vibrancy, with a pattern in confident colour-ways that brings that feeling of leisurely resort chic to your home.

5 tips for styling your home.1. Keep your eyes and your mind open.
We all have our favourite brands, but sometimes it can be fun to try
something new. For example, the Helena Springfield new ‘Vintage’ looks
of colourful retro inspired prints that launched in 2016 has a really wide
appeal. Or the Murmur range of bedding and homeware. These quiet,
subtle prints and colours are designed to be layered, bringing individuality
to every space.2. Keep it simple, always.
In some rooms I like to keep walls and floors in a light neutral colour and run
the same colours throughout the interior to create the illusion of space.
This calm background is the perfect backdrop for carefully considered
bedding and cushions, plus paintings, artisan rugs and ceramics that mean
a lot to me.3. If it’s not any use, throw it away.
We all keep things we don’t use. Decluttering has an instant and positive
effect on our interiors. Having fewer things helps us feel happier. It’s this
kind of mindset that keeps us all in the moment.4. Travel, travel, travel.
Creativity needs fed. I am designer, and I find inspiration all around.
That’s why I like travelling to different cities as I feel each place has its own
particular light, colour, architecture and sense of style.5. Enjoy yourself.

Here at Bedeck we work with a network of trusted suppliers across the globe. Upon meeting with one of our suppliers recently we learnt how leftover textiles from our orders are used and felt compelled to bring the story to our customers.
A supply team we have worked with for many years, based in India talked us through how for quality reasons production of textiles can usually over run by between 5 to 7% and it is with this overrun, rather than Bedeck request it be shipped back to Ireland, our supplier donates on to help with a very worthy cause.
Donated to a Non Profit Organisation, who work with groups of woman from underprivileged backgrounds to teach them skills of embroidery and stitching. The extra fabric, thread and accessories, allows them to craft small bags, earrings, key chains to needle-worked crafts, all hand-made within the held workshops. Our supplier detailed how the workshops in turn give the Indian woman a sense of independence and purpose.
Items are then sold off to raise funds to keep the Non Profit Organisation going. A very recent project for the group of woman saw the production of reusable fabric bags; sold onto small grocers to discourage the use of plastic alternatives. We are one of many customers of this supplier in India but we are thankful to be a part of this great cause and we will continue our support.

The 2018 Murmur Collection continues our relaxed journey into a world of subtle pattern and colour. First launched back in 2015 at Maison et Objet in Paris, and designed to embrace the idea of slow living, our simple back to basics approach emphasises the natural, using cottons, wools, linens, wood and stoneware.
A subtle homeware collection where every pattern has been hand-crafted and painted by Murmur’s team of designers in Ireland, and every product has been crafted and sourced from specialist makers around the world. Introducing beautiful teal and charcoal ceramics to layer up with our core grey collection, cushions in a chartreuse pop sit alongside the soft dove grey bedding, soft washed denim blues, teals and charcoal all feature. This is a simple, refined, but very relaxed palette that’s complemented with an exquisite attention to detail.
For SS18 we introduce serveware in the form of small and large centrepiece trays and coasters made on the Island of Oland, Sweden using Scandinavian birch wood. Our home fragrance collection completes the ambience of the collection with a palette of natural fragrances, each blended and hand poured in the UK, each designed to last day or night. Sakura blossom brings a bright, fruity raspberry and rhubarb scent. Ebony Mist is pink peppers and spice on top of a deep woody base. Rare Earth is vertiver and cedar wood with hint of spice. With single wick candles made from 100% natural soy wax and a high fragrance content, and a diffuser which lasts up to eight weeks, this range

Always keeping an eye on young emerging talent, here at Bedeck we believe in supporting the next generation of young designers, so year on year we run various graduate placement programmes and awards showcasing the very best of local talent. Last week for the second year in a row, 1st and 2nd prizes were awarded to two final year students with the Bedeck ‘Emerging Textile Designer’ award in conjunction with the University of Ulster.
Judged by our Head of Design; Julie Hall and decided upon on two categories – Printed and Woven Textiles. Julie noted what criteria she looks for when judging the young designers; “At Bedeck we passionately believe in supporting design talent, the ‘Emerging Textile Designer’ award is given to the graduate designer who shows a wonderful creative flair for painting and drawing, the ability to create innovative design and illustrate with an inspiring sense of texture and colour.”
1st PRIZE WINNER
1st place winner was Emma Louise McKay for her printed textiles. Emma Louise took an illustrative approach to flowers in their natural form across various scales. Her collection ‘Avia’ was designed in honour of her grandparents and inspired by flowers that hold symbolic references and medicinal properties to cancer and alzheimer’s. Her research was carried out through photography, taking elements from different photos of flowers to create her colour palettes.
