Back in July a few members of the Bedeck Team including Head Of Design Julie Hall took a trip to ‘New Designers’ an exciting design show held in London’s Business Design Centre. New Designers is an event used to showcase the U.K’s finest emerging design talent and a successful platform to bring new designers and commerce together.
Exhibitor categories included: Jewellery & Contemporary Design Crafts, Textiles, Fashion & Costume Design, Media & Industry and One Year On.
Head of Design Julie Hall @ New Designers
Whilst we enjoyed the quirky, original and largely beautiful textile pieces the young designers had presented up we also caught up with two exhibiting graduate designers who have also recently just joined the Bedeck Design Team.
Head of Design Julie Hall with New Designer & her work; Susan Montgomery
Susan presented pieces from her graduate collection, ‘Woodlands’, a printed textile collection for interiors. A collection loosely based around the patterns and textures associated with trees, leaves & forests. All designed using her own drawings, mark making and collage using both contemporary (Photoshop) and traditional methods (by hand) to achieve a real sense of scale.
Susan used a warm autumnal colour palette, with accents of stronger colours such as pink and navy along with cooler neutrals to achieve a balance within the collection, whilst often using hints of metallics. Steering clear of the conventional greens and browns associated with her subject, Susan’s collections resulted with a fresh contemporary feel.
Susan’s body of work, showcased at New Designers was an entirely screen printed and hand dyed mini collection with several different processes involved in producing them including: discharge and pigment printing, foiling, devore printing and cross dyeing .
Cited as a great experience by Susan after finishing up at the University of Ulster, one that gave a useful insight into what’s out there in the design world!
One Year On
Featuring in the ‘One Year On’ group of over 60 emerging designers with a collection of outstanding and original work all in their first year of business.... was another of our new designers; Amanda Nicholl.
Amanda showcased her new ‘Anam’ print collection which was inspired by personal memories and experiences. Amanda draws and paints as a way of documenting things. From quick sketches Amanda then develops onto collage, mark making and laser cutting to create various design ideas, then increases the scale to give it its striking style.
The designs were intended to make a bold statement but without overly complicating the prints, allowing for bursts of fun colour. Using hand screen printing techniques on crisp clean cotton bases with pigment and discharge paste to create lengths of fabric with diminutive touches of digital.
